The next 2600 meeting will take place at Theo's on Friday, September 2nd @ 7PM. Most folks missed the August meeting because they were attending BSides/Blackhat/Defcon in Las Vegas (and by attending, I mean getting blackout drunk and passing out in the hallways at the Rio.) Historically, the meeting just after Blackhat/Defcon is our busiest of the year.

March 2600 - New Location!

The 2600 meeting for March will be the first at our new location: Theo's. After testing the water by holding half of our meeting there last month, we've been invited back by the owner. It's located right next to our old meeting place, has plenty of table space, power plugs, access to wifi, & reasonably priced food/drinks. The time has not changed, and our meeting will still be starting at 7 PM. If everything goes well tonight, we will email the magazine publishers to have them update the listed location.

While we have a lot of love for Backspace (our previous venue), their shift to hosting more music shows has made holding a Friday night meeting very difficult.

Some discussion points tonight will include:

2600 is here again, and for the first time, we are meeting by default at Theo's rather than getting kicked out of backspace when they feel like starting to set up for the show.

Tonight, for one night only, our special guest Julian Assange will be pre-signing pre-copies of his pre-autobiography, and selling 10 dollar high-five photo ops. Later, some of us may or may not be handing out some juicy 0day related to a certain company here in town. We will also be running the first ever pwn2pwn contest starting at 9pm, so make sure to bring a laptop if you want to compete, and remove your wireless card if you don't.

Backspace is closing down at 7 for a show, so after that I expect we will be moving to Theo's (sandwich shop next door) utill 8/9 or so, then the hackerspace (brainsilo.org)

Most of our regulars know about Brainsilo, as we frequently move the 2600 meeting there as the night progresses and backspace starts their music shows.

Our weekly open house exists to give people an opportunity to come check out the space when there are other people there.

We have wifi, comfy chairs, desks, a community library, a 70's era (now working) pinball machine, and lots of other electronic doo-dads and gizmos. Some folks are also working on a reprap type project.

If you're interested in information security, hardware hacking, or just geeky stuff in general you'll have a good time.

You can find more information on the website. We are located right off the yellow line MAX near the Rose Quarter. Please note that the entrance is in the Alleyway behind the building (Kerby Annex) at the stairs with the Brainsilo banner.

When it gets noisy we will probably be moving to Theo's (the awesome sandwich shop next door), and later to the brainsilo hackerspace. As usual, bring any gear/code you want to break/showoff. December 2600 this Friday. No forgetting. As usual we will be meeting at backspace around 6-7. It looks like a show is going to start up around 8pm. They will let you in if you say you are with 2600, but if the noise gets annoying, we will likely move to Old Town Pizza (around 3rd and Davis), and eventually we will be moving to the brainsilo hackerspace.

Since backspace started having more and more shows that conflict with 2600, there has been a lot of talk about moving the meeting. Moving to the hackerspace would be a bit sketchy, and discourage new people from showing up since it is in a dark back alley. What do people think of moving the meeting to Old Town Pizza permanently? They don't have shows which is good, but their wireless sucks, and they get mad if people don't order food.

If there is enough support for the move, one of us can contact 2600 and get it changed officially in the magazine.

In honor of fleet week, there will be firefox swag. Come claim your bracelets, stickers, and temporary tatoos. I grabbed a couple handfuls from the mozilla table on the way out of OSBridge, which was more fun than I expected, even though I only caught the last few hours.

The party starts at six, and there will likely be the usual migration to the brainsilo hackerspace around 9 as the music at backspace starts ramping up.

Looks like we will be moving in during the first week of January. It's a really awesome space about .8 miles north of the Rose Quarter in north Portland. There is a stop a bit closer on the yellow line, one stop out of fairless, but the .8 miles is maybe a 10 minute walk. If you want to get involved, a membership fee of 80 dollars per month will get you a key which grants 24/7 access to the space.

I've got some fun new things I've been looking into, and some old projects I've been poking at now that conference season is dying down. Bring your code, bring your gear, bring your friends. Most people will be showing up around 6-7pm, and a few around 7-9.

Looks like there is a small show tonight, so they won't be kicking us out or anything. You should just be able to tell the door troll that you are here for 2600, and they will let you in without charge, but if they start being dorks about it, we will probably move to Fords.

It's that time again!

Today is the first Friday in September, and we all know what that means (2600, duh.)

We will be meeting downtown at our usual location, Backspace. The meeting should get started sometime between 6 & 7 PM. Todays forecast is looking pretty good for September in Portland, with a high of 72 degrees; a little warm for hackers who prefer the cool glow of their LCD's, but I'm sure we'll be able to manage.

Postmodern will be giving a lightning talk on using Sinatra to quickly write phishing websites, and possibly give us a demonstration using Ronin::Web::Server to transparently proxy content for those interested.

The August ~~700 Club~~ 2600 meeting had a very decent turnout; it had a higher attendance than all my birthdays combined. The meeting immediately after ~~vegas/strippers/partying~~ blackhat/security-b-sides/defcon is always lots of fun. Leftover drugs are consumed, event CD's are copied by those who weren't able to make it, epic stories of hacker bravado & drunken escapades are shared.

We saw a bunch of new faces mixed in with the regulars at the August meeting, we hope to see them at Septembers meeting. It's amazing to see so many young people showing up to the meetings with the right attitude towards learning. I don't think I've seen such a positive influx of people in my 5 years of attendance. The future of the Portland hacking scene looks very promising!

This year Dean & Goldy gave the "Introduction to WiMAX Hacking" talk at Defcon, which had a very positive crowd response. We had a Clear WiMAX home router at the meeting and were showing off some of it's capabilities; I'll be bringing mine to the September meeting & I'll hook it up to an AP for people to connect to & play with. If you're interested in tinkering with WiMAX (and you should be), be sure to join the wimax-hacking group.

We've had 2600 at Backspace for several years now, & we love them to death. A year or so ago they built a stage & started having music shows. Rad. Unfortunately for us, this means that Friday night can get very busy (and very loud.) It's hard enough to talk over other excited hackers, but it's damn near impossible to talk when sub-par rock opera is being played way too loud (I have a hype machine account, & that makes me a music critic.) To fix this problem, we are now using Fords as a backup location. They are located right next door to backspace, are open till 3am, have delicious food, & more importantly, power & wifi. Also, I know that the blog/magazine/etc say that the meeting starts at 6pm, but sometimes things don't really kick off until closer to 7pm. So if you're new & nothing seems to be happening, wait around a bit.

For the September meeting, Postmodern Modulus III of Sophsec Intrusion Labs & creator of the Ronin platform will be giving a lightning talk on "Using Sinatra to quickly write phishing sites or client side control servers." I'm not sure exactly what this entails, but postmodern is a fucking amazing Ruby hacker so if you don't pay attention (or come stoned), you'll really be missing out on some great stuff.

In recent months, the hacker pseudo-religion known as Anti-Sec has had quite a resurgence. There have been several high profile hacks including Astalavista and Imageshack. Using our advanced knowledge engine we have discovered the identity of the hacker who has perpetrated these attacks. We also believe the same hacker is responsible for the recent attacks on Matasano, Kevin Mitnick, Dan Kaminsky, 0x000000, hak5, & other security industry bitches. His name: dr. raid. Gadi Evron, prize winning turkey farmer, accomplished zoologist, and leader of the underground hacker cult known as "antisec" struck an epic blow against the white hat community this morning by defacing the website of Matasano Security.

A funny note from our favorite appelbaum mentions that the matasano web server is actually being hacked from an idefense mail server(209.112.118.10). Lulzy extreme.

I spent a couple hours bruting the hash for this "adam" character mentioned in the haxlog, and either my machine is way too slow, or adam was NOT using a trivial password. If that is the case, and assuming antisec didn't tamper with the log (TERRIBLE ASSUMPTION), then the attack being used is not a simple ssh password enumeration like many seem to be claiming. This raises the possibility that antisec is actually in possession of some rather 1337 0day.

I really hope those running forensics on the penetration come up with something awesome, and can finally provide some solid evidence one way or the other on this mystical claims of ssh 0day. From what I can make out, it also looks like Gadi is going to attempt to sell his ssh 0day at infosecsellout's auction next week for 500k.

Portland Mayor Sam Adams opened the second day of Open Source Bridge with a keynote calling for increased collaboration between the City of Portland and the open source community.

Why? In hopes of making Portland the “hub of open source” and—in a bit of throwing down the municipal open source gauntlet—vowing to “out open source” Vancouver, British Columbia, which has recently declared itself a completely open city.

Since there seems to be a new fad of people writing rules for the meeting, I though I would jump on the bandwagon :-)

1. Rules are for wussies.

2. Bring all the toys you can. Got your USRP to do something fancy? Bring it. Find some nifty features in the new kismet? Show those off. Find some new memory corruption in quicktime, but can't quite land code? We can help with that.

3. Talk and listen. Take the amount of time you have been at the current meeting, and divide by the number of people present. This is a length of time denoted by X. X is the ideal time for how much talking you should have done so far. If you have spoken for less than X/2, try randomly blurting out something cool you saw recently. If you have spoken for more than 2X, you should be asking more questions to other people, speaking with more breaks so people can interrupt without feeling like assholes, or maybe you just need to be more concise about what you are saying :-p

4. Don't worry about getting owned. Everyone gets owned eventually, or they live such a cloistered existence that they have no serious understanding of security. People get owned at 2600 because it's funny. No one at 2600 is the type of spiteful bastard that is going to rm your life. Most people there will just laugh and tell you when it happens. There is a rare exception for people who are super annoying, or mega drama queens etc, who might find some rick astley in their live journal.

5. PoC or GTFO. No one cares if you can win the internet in under 10 minutes. Don't give someone crap about running IE6 on win2k if you don't know how to land on it. If you think someone is running insecure tech, then own them. If you think something is easy because you saw someone blog about it somewhere, then try it for yourself. Avoid bragging about being able to do something that you have never done before.

6. 2600 accepts anyone the law allows. Mexicans, bigfoot, hipsters, garbage pail kids, old people, new people, malicious criminals, corporate whores, federal agents, even chan kids. Just show up. It's fun.

The last 2600 was ok. It was a little annoying with the guitar hero contest going on in the background. Then we got kicked out for a concert. We chilled outside and talked for over an hour. Everything I heard of the concert was complete crap.

Okay everybody, heres the deal!

Turns out backspace is getting awful sandy around 8pm tonight, so around 7:45 (or whenever we get kicked out) whoever wants to come will be embarking on a candle light vigil to a magical wonderful place called Julia's Cafe. Also known as Trent's cafe, since many of us know Trent, and I don't think any of us know Julia.

2. walk past lloyd center to broadway, you should be on 15th or so
3. walk east to somewhere between 21st and 22nd
4. enter the building marked "Julia's Cafe"

There will be discussion as to whether or not we should make this move permanent.
We have been offered some pretty nice perks at Julia's, and we have pretty much been shit on a few too many times by the backspace management.

Just checked the calendar at backspace. Looks like there are no events planned for this evening. This is a good thing. The last few meetings have sucked hard core because of events at backspace either making it imposable to meet or just too uncomfortable.

I tap3w0rm will be their early and try and snag us our usual corner and some extra chairs. I am hoping for a good turnout but you never know.

We do need to talk this meeting about weather backspace is the correct place / environment for us to be meeting at. If anyone has a better idea please bring it up either here as a comment or at the meeting.

this time we went next door to fords, however we went to old town pizza the time before that.

This meeting totaly blew from some points.

Musicfest northwest was here and backspace was part of it. Nothing prevented us from meeting at backspace accept for the mind numbingly loud and poorly played music that was flowing out the doors of backspace. The music was so loud that we could not hear each other talking outside of backspace. we moved over to fords and some fun was had but we wrapped up early.

We had a new guy who showed up for the ball gargling ( music fest northwest ) and saw the 2600 mag sitting on the table and joined us for a little while. He is cool and i have had time to email with him over the last few days. I hope he comes back. He would make a great addition to the group.

I have added to all my craigslist sales ( and you should too) the words "Discounts for PDX2600 Members" to all my craigslist items inside the description. you can follow this LINK to see everythign I am selling or anyone else who adds that to their sales. I am willing to come down on the prices for ACTIVE PDX2600 Members. Mostly because I know the stuff will be well taken care of by likeminded people If you show up to by shit and I don’t know who you are the price is what’s listed in the add. Otherwise if you argue with me I will simply mace you and hit you with a bat. It's simple.

LAST MEETING.
I got to sit down with Dean Pierce and he showed me his framework for his project "Seeds of contempt". You can checkout his project HERE. I think this has a lot of promise and it's nice having a local programmer doing this so we can see it unfold and get his help as we write modules into it. I personally have several ideas for network visualization modules. Good job and good luck Dean.

We had a nice turnout and had some more new members show up. Bar trivia was great and fun and my team won. WE ROCKED!

August 2008 - PDX 2600 Meeting

Ok fools.

So who all is going to be there at the next 2600 meeting? For those who can’t make it or are interested in a daylight meeting I am kind of planning an informal 2600 Daytime meeting at the quiznos by my house ( LINK TO DIRECTIONS ) I still need to think about time. I am not sure what time and date is the best. I was thinking the Saturday after the meeting at around 1:00pm

I want to do a second meeting some other time in the month that may be easier for some people to get to. A daylight ( i know pierce daylight hurts your eyes) meeting. I was thinking if we had a good part of a day rather than an evening where we are all fighting the call of clubs / sex / beer / sleep. we may be able to go out and do something truly interesting. I am looking for ideas for truly interesting activities for a daylight meeting to do after everyone is gathered.

Also, good news everyone! For the first time ever, I will be attending an August meeting! I'm not sure what DT was smoking, but for some reason Blackhat/Defcon is scheduled for the 6th through the 10th this year, so those of us that never miss a trip to vegas will also be able to attend the 2600 meeting on August 1st. Woo!

Fun fun had by all. Except Brian and Gregor who played some video game the whole time (as well as showing off some mad Haskell skills) :-p The rest of us managed to bust through the L5 defense grid, and rooted the DoD D-base. That gives us 3 bridges onto SIPR, as well as 2 owned internal SIPR routers (via Chinese router "bugs") and drops on 3 internal mail servers.

Progress was recorded on my contempt project. We discussed the implications for webstart in contempt. Postmodern%3 made fun of me, and challenged me to write an exec() plugin for my seed system, so it might someday be useful. Gleg and I talked a bit more about finger painting, and mad 0day was passed around by all.

We once again argued about which programming language was best for writing mad h4x0r tools, and once again, java came out on top. Python made a close second though this month, and Ruby made a surprisingly weak display. C of course was a distant fourth.

I had hoped that people would have used it more than the whole 15 visits that were not me in the last 3 months. so like the title sais. I give up.

I am still willing to put together a site if there is interest however the maxmcs.com account is going to expire in a few months and I have no interest in paying for that site just to keep 2600pdx alive there.

If you’re interested in donating cash to the cause of a web site for us let me know. I am just at this moment disappointed that this blog and the site i setup are not gathering people on any level.

That and I am in a bad mood.

Hello fellow PDX 2600 Members!

Anyone have anything specific they want to bring up before the meeting on June 6th 2008.

I would like to see what people are doing for WPA cracking. I have used cowpatty with precomputed tables to crack my own AP however what does it take to do this in the wild. I have never successfully been able to use a deauth attack on myself.I wanted to discuss the post I made on my site [LINK] about setting up a nice domain. I have very little issue setting it up. I will register the domain and add it to my current hosting account for the whole whopping $15 however if it takes off I want to know if people are willing to pay in for the site and get it its own hosting account. I am not going to go through the effort if no one is going to use it however. I am going to add a few polls to this blog to try and gauge peoples interest in several of my ideas. The main ideas are: Domain, Merchandise (I know people who can do shirts and stuff for next to nothing), and meetings outside the normal monthly gatherings. I will post those polls on the bar to the right. You may have to scroll down to see them but please vote it will help.

If you want to vandalize this blog, contact any of the admins, and they will probably give you admin rights too. I just got tired of not having any super useful top google hits for pdx 2600 information. Lack of organization has some disadvantages.
